BUENOS AIRES CIUDAD SECRETA

WHY ‘CIUDAD SECRETA’

While Buenos Aires is known as the Paris of South America for her Belle Epoque architecture and strong cultural connection with Europe, she can be a challenge to navigate. With over 4 million people roaming throughout the city, this romantic concrete jungle isn’t a city that shows her deep and rich beauty easily to outsiders. Rather, she is much more a secret jewel box, filled with treasures that need to be discovered, step-by-step, and revealed to each one of us. I see Buenos Aires’ spirit hidden in the interactions of the slow cafes, the easy talk on a bus, the wink of a newspaper kiosk vendor, the unexpected change of routes because of city construction and strikes, the corner of two blocks that surprise us with a completely unexpected abandoned historic building. There is a profound depth to her in all that she offers, we just need to know where to look.

Tango is also a hidden treasure that Buenos Aires gives us, through an entire universe of classes, practicas, milongas, festivals and more, ranging from classic and traditional old-milonguero style to young contemporary trends. My proposal with Ciudad Secreta, is to show you the beauty and the secrets of our beloved Buenos Aires from an insider’s perspective. I do this by avoiding the beaten and commercialized path and instead walking hand-in-hand with you to places that are meaningful from a historical, literary or social perspective. Buenos Aires can be overwhelming, noisy and even dangerous if approached as a typical tourist, but it can be a precious, safe and magical experience when presented with her treasures.

This is a unique and special trip, designed to immerse you in the culture of Buenos Aires and the art of its beloved dance. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and interact with the ones who create and make tango what it is, along with understanding much more about the ‘make’ of our music and our porteño dance.

Purpose

Buenos Aires, Ciudad Secreta allows us to acquire a more wholesome understanding of tango through meeting and learning with accomplished and respected teachers, dancers and milongueros of Buenos Aires. What is the essence of tango? Where does truth lie in the myths and where can we break away from falsities? Bring home a new understanding, new steps and concepts, fresh inspiration to treasure and to share with your community and those across the globe.

The idea is not only to immerse yourself in the tango universe of Buenos Aires, but also to know the city better, as Buenos Aires and its culture is the ‘material of which tango is made of’. We will visit fun and interesting places that are fundamental to the make of tango, like Hipódromo Argentino (Palermo horse racecourse, the city’s first horse racing venue opened in 1876), we will visit and try to paint like a ‘fileteador porteño’ the traditional painting technique of the city, and then share a vermouth in a contemporary and hip vermouth bar inspired in our Italian heritage.
